The burning slowly moves from your stomach to your throat. Not only is the pain annoying, it is also extremely painful. To make matters even worse, heartburn leaves an unpleasant taste in your mouth for you to deal with for hours.
You cannot simply go to sleep, like you would for a migraine headache; that only makes it worse. Taking a few Tums will sometimes help get rid of heartburn, but not always. What else can you do?
Acid reflux, aka heartburn, is a serious digestive tract condition in which acide from your stomach backs into your throat. Not only does it hurt, it can also seriously damage your esophagus, since it does not have the natural protection that your stomach has.
The first approach to reducing your heartburn symptoms is to monitor your diet. Certain spicy foods have been shown to increase the production of stomach acid. Other food triggers include citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty foods and caffeine.
Natural cures typically reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Some people recommend drinking water that has one tablespoon of apple cider diluted within it. I prefer to simply eat the entire apple. Certain herbs, vegetables and even chewing gum will help alleviate some heartburn symptoms.
Making a few changes to your diet can help reduce the impact that heartburn has on your life. While it is important to reduce the symptoms of heartburn whenever you can, this is not the cure.
